Fashion Trends Coming Spring 2023

Discover the hottest spring fashion trends of 2023!

I don’t know about you, but all this weird weather we’ve been experiencing around the country has me incredibly excited for spring!  I can’t wait to ditch my puffy winter coat for a crop top and a flowy maxi skirt — then it’s outside to enjoy the sunshine!

The vibe for this season is loose-fitting and free — what could be more perfect for welcoming our springtime sunshine!

Elevated basics

Spring 2023 fashion = elevated basics.

This spring, we’re going back to the basics.  Simple and elegant, blouses and blazers are dominating the fashion scene.  The vibe is classy, yet effortlessly cool, and it gives you the perfect excuse to utilize the clothes you already own — a plus for both your wallet and the environment!

We’re leaning away from elaborate patterns and designs in our everyday looks.  The color scheme for the season is veering more toward a handful of statement colors, with neutrals and softer colors in the mix.  The result is clean, chic silhouettes that flatter our bodies and help us to feel comfortable in our skin.

If you are unsure about wearing a huge chunk of brazen color but are looking to add a little pizzazz to your ensemble, let your accessories take the spotlight!

Key Lime Pie, Fiery Red, & Electric Blue Lemonade

Spring 2023 fashion = key lime pie, fiery red, & electric blue lemonade.

If you are looking to incorporate some color into your spring wardrobe (aside from the usual classic spring shades — think Robin’s Egg Blue, Lavender, Peach Pink, Empire Yellow, and Crystal Rose) — then these three bolder, more dramatic colors are the way to go!

Key Lime Pie is the softest of the three, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a standout!  From knit sweaters to pantsuits, this bright, fruity color is a guaranteed head-turner.  I recommend using it exclusively with neutral staple pieces — as it easily clashes with other colors — and utilizing black or white accessories to add balance to your ensemble.

Fiery Red is a power color.  Whether you choose its deep red shade or a brighter, more orange tone (like saffron), it is sure to make you feel more daring and dauntless.  This bold, bodacious color works best in dresses, blazers, or as an accent to a black or white outfit.

Electric Blue Lemonade is a cooler, richer color that flatters every skin tone.  It’s the perfect accessory color for a monochromatic ensemble, or you can rock an entire outfit in this electrifying shade!

Metallics

Spring 2023 fashion = metallics.

“Best believe I’m still bejeweled
When I walk in the room
I can still make the whole place shimmer!

— Taylor Swift (“Bejeweled,” Midnights, 2022)

Taylor has spoken.  And you’d best believe we’re all taking her advice to shimmer this season.  We briefly touched on the popular metallic color scheme when we mentioned the up-and-coming body armor trend in the Top Fashion Trends for 2023 (which you can read about here) but this spring, we’re incorporating the luminous silvers and golds more than with just our accessories.

Yes, metallics are transitioning into everyday pieces — think gleaming gold maxi skirts and silver jackets!  If these glowing colors are too bright for you, test out milder rust-colors, like copper or bronze, for a darker shade that still allows you to shine.  Metallic shoes are especially trending this season — adding the perfect amount of subtle shine without being too overpowering.

If you really want to feel like a mirrorball this spring, exhume those pieces from the Summer of 2022 and let your sequins shine!  They’ll look absolutely divine when paired with metallic-colored accents.

Ombre dip-dye

Spring 2023 fashion = ombre dip-dye.

Usually, when you think tie-dye, you think warm summer sun and lots of bright, swirly colors.  Well, the tie-die this spring is taking a different approach — and a different name:  dip-die.  The difference comes from the process.  Instead of tying and dying, creating lots of neon swirls, you dip sections into dye.  The resulting subtle ombre is a more elegant version, and in some cases has made its way to fashion runways (for example, Ulla Johnson’s “Spring Summer 2023 Runway” show).  The pattern, itself, is subtle when compared with the flashy floral patterns we usually see this time of year, and it often creates an almost dreamy, pillowy, cloud-like appeal that makes you feel weightless and free.

This trend looks great on longer, flowing pieces like skirts or dresses in the colors of this season’s hues, but we also see a unique “sunset ombre” pattern — varying shades of red, orange, and yellow, combined with black or white.  These warm colors look phenomenal on a long maxi dress or knitted cardigan and are sure to brighten up your wardrobe!

We have a feeling this trend will extend into the summer months as well, so you might want to invest in a few pieces now.  Your future self will thank you!

Crochet & knit

Spring 2023 fashion = crochet & knit.

Knits are nothing new, and they have been determinedly making their way through the fashion circuit since early 2022.  But this season, specifically, we’re seeing a lot of what’s known as “cobweb” knits —  gossamer strands of delicate yarns woven by fairies into mystical cobweb dresses and tops!  Well, that’s what they look like, anyway…

These knits have a lot of personality and can be used to add texture and more dimension to your outfits.  They are purposefully knit or crocheted with unusual yarns in a very open, airy pattern.  The yarns, themselves, can mimic the dip-dyed color patterns of the season, or create a gauzy overlay — picture a fuzzy, all-white cobweb cardigan over your favorite crop top and skirt.  And — following the sheer trend that’s also set to transition into spring — they can look fantastic on their own!  Allow your cute new bralette to peek through the holes in a knit dress, long, flowing cardigan, or pullover cobweb sweater.

You can show as much or as little skin as you desire, or be as snug or breezy as the weather calls for using layers.  Again, because this season is shying away from loud patterns, these knits are a tool to help give your ensembles lots of monochrome texture and a subtle but unusual fashion flair that catches the eye.

White cotton

Spring 2023 fashion = white cotton.

We see an increase in popularity of white cotton pieces every spring, and you’ll be happy to hear that 2023 is no exception!  This light-weight, breathable material is always used to herald the coming of the spring, and its white color creates a fresh, pristine look that’s very on-brand with this season’s styles.

You’re going to want to stick with loose, flowing pieces, like dresses and wide, straight-legged trousers.  Nothing too tight or restricting!  For some extra embellishments, look into procuring some embroidered blouses or skirts.  You want to keep the look simple and clean, but feel free to accessories with some pastels or this season’s top three colors!

Pinstripe suits

Spring 2023 fashion = pinstripe suits.

Whether it’s for business or for pleasure, pinstripes are in this season!  This is another low-key pattern you can incorporate into your wardrobe that will become a new spring staple.

Suits for women were a huge trend last summer, and we anticipate that same success this year.  You can go all-out in a full pantsuit for a sleek and polished look, or you can stick with just the tailored blazer to elevate your business-casual style.

If you want to keep it casual, you can also try out a fitted pinstripe vest that ends at your natural waist.  This looks fantastic with a simple, white blouse and wide, straight-legged trousers or dark jeans.

Train skirts

Spring 2023 fashion = train skirts.

While the 90s-vibe maxi- and midi-skirts are definitely taking the world by storm this season, we’re also seeing a resurgence of train skirts!  Usually, these fabulous cascading designs are reserved for red-carpet galas and weddings, but this season, we’re seeing a lot of contemporary looks showcasing this unique shape.

Trains are emerging in a few different styles — the main ones being high-low dresses (like your old homecoming dress) or a single piece of fabric draping along one side.  The result draws the eye to the hemline and legs, and makes your legs appear longer — especially when paired with a high-heeled shoe or wedges.

Feel free play around with different necklines and accessories to find the shape and style that suits your body and your style best!

Balletcore

Spring 2023 fashion = balletcore.

Move over, BarbieCore, because there’s a new sheriff in town!

I’m talking legwarmers, tights, bodysuits, tulle — the works!  But no pointe shoes – LOL!  Let’s save those for the actual ballerinas, okay?  Ballet flats with square-toes and little bows will do just fine.

Balletcore is a feminine style that favors soft pinks, nudes, and occasionally black — perfect for this spring’s color scheme!

Puffy tulle dresses, soft and delicate “romantic tutus” (full, multilayered skirts made of tulle), and skin-tight bodysuits are at the forefront of this trend — especially when paired together to create a long, flattering shape.  It’s a mixture of glamor meets comfort.  Your outfits should allow you to breathe and move freely — just like a dancer!

Shoulder-length earrings

Spring 2023 fashion = shoulder-length earrings.

With all the simplicity in the trends for this season, we need some show-stopping accessories to add a little razzle-dazzle to our everyday outfits, and shoulder-length earrings are the perfect accessory to take your ensemble to the next level.  Like the rest of this season’s trends, they’re classic and chic, but will also add in an extra pop of depth and sparkle!

They’re much more subtle than a statement necklace but will still draw the eye up toward your beautiful face and neck — and they’re sure to highlight all your best features!

You can keep it simple with a thin strand of pearls or jewels, or up your accessory game with fringe and feathers.  Plus, these earrings pair really well with an elegant updo or slicked-back ponytail for when the weather gets a little too warm.  Whether you have a favorite pair of shoulder-length jewel earrings you can’t wait to bring out again, or you’re building your collection from scratch, you’re sure to find something perfect to go with spring’s new looks!  Have fun with it.

Remember, 2023 is the year of comfort.  Don’t be afraid to try new styles and experiment with this season’s trends to make them your own!
