6 Ways to Relish the Cold Weather, Fire Signs!

6 ways to relish the cold weather, fire signs! - woman standing in snowy forest with arms outstretched and wearing a camel coat and red winter hat

This winter has already been a harsh one — even in regions that usually get milder weather.  If you aren’t used to such snow and ice, it can be tempting to spend your time snuggled up close to the fire, slipping into a winter-induced lethargy.

If you haven’t previously developed your winter weather coping skills, my active fire signs, you may find yourself miserably trapped indoors. Here are some ways to mix up your everyday routine and actually enjoy the cold weather, instead of sulking around and yearning for summer to return!

Plan an epic snowball fight

Plan an epic snowball fight - hands wearing red winter gloves and holding a snowball shaped as a heart

If you aren’t used to the cold — or even if you are, but still don’t really enjoy it — going outside when the temperature drops is the last thing you want to do.  But, take a chance this winter!  Bundle up in your warmest coat, hat, scarf, and gloves (waterproof, if you have them) and invite your friends over for a huge snowball fight.  Keeping moving will help you stay warm, and you’ll be so focused on out-snowballing your friends and family that you won’t even notice the cold.

The fight can be a free-for-all with snowballs flying all around, or you can do a “Last Man Standing” competition where each hit is a knock-out until there’s only one person left.  If the running doesn’t keep you warm, the adrenaline and your competitive nature sure will!

Compete in your local Polar Bear Plunge

Not for the faint of heart, Polar Bear Plunges (aka Penguin Plunges in some areas) are held all over the world. They’re usually part of a charity event to help raise money for organizations like the Special Olympics.  The original Polar Bear Club was founded in 1903 in Coney Island, NY, by a well-known health figure of the time.  The members have enjoyed an annual New Year’s Day swim in the icy waters of the Atlantic ever since.  Now everywhere, from November to April of every year, members of various Polar Bear Clubs and other health enthusiasts enjoy an invigorating dip in icy cold water.

Remember, these are organized events with plenty of safety measures in place. This is including, but not limited to, emergency personnel on site in the event of “cold water shock.”  Unless you’re already well experienced with dips in extremely cold water, don’t try this at home and don’t try this alone — looking at you, Aries!  Polar Plunge responsibly, and earn the ultimate bragging rights.

Take a ski trip

Winter is prime ski weather, and if you’ve never tried your hand at the sport, now is the time!  You’ll love the feeling of exhilaration as you race down the slopes, and the mountain views are incredible.  Most lodges have plenty of skis to rent, so don’t worry about making a major investment to start. You could also can switch it up and try snowboarding, sledding, tobogganing, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing.  You can even find a resort with a spa to nurse your aches and pains after a long day on the slopes!  Plus, you always feel really cooped up during the winter months. A ski weekend is the perfect excuse to get out of the house!

Even if you aren’t a fan of skiing or snowboarding, you can hang around the ski lodge. Make some new friends and enjoy some much-needed time away from home.

Lounge by the fire

This one shouldn’t come as a surprise, fire signs.  Unfortunately, winter means daylight is in short supply.  When the sun dips below the horizon, the best way for you to keep warm is to huddle close around a roaring fire.

I know many of us aren’t lucky enough to have a fireplace in our homes. Don’t worry, there are ways around that!  You can buy a fireplace-like heater, have a bonfire outside (if weather permits), or even pull up a video on your TV or laptop of a fireplace burning.  If you are enjoying a TV fireplace, grab your favorite blanket and fluffy socks. Then, turn up the volume on that crackling fire sound, and don’t forget a rich, hot drink to sip. Enjoy the cozy, relaxing ambiance. Light some candles to complete the effect!  For those with a real fire, roast some s’mores or sip a mug of hot chocolate. Let your toes get nice and toasty!

Host a game night

Host a game night - table with wine and playing cards

Winter can be the loneliest time of the year for folks. It’s important to spend time with your friends and family. (Maybe even visit a house-bound neighbor!)  Hosting a game night is a fantastic way to harness your competitive energy while gathering everyone together for a fun night in!

You can stick with the classics like Monopoly, Pictionary, or charades. Or, try your hand at more advanced, modern games like Disney’s Villainous, Arkham Horror, the Hunt a Killer series, or Betrayal at House on the Hill.  Just remember, these games are supposed to be fun.  You don’t always need to win to have a great time!

Make some mulled wine

Mulled wine is a must-have during a snowy winter day, and it’s super easy to make!  Every recipe featured online is a little different. However, most are made by mixing red or white wine with brandy, citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, and spices like cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.  Prepare it in under thirty minutes on the stove or leave it to stew for a few hours in a slow cooker.

This warm, aromatic drink is perfect for sharing at your next game night. Just the thing you need to warm you up after an epic snowball fight! If you’d like to check out some other drink recommendations, check out our blog below…
