It’s been a long, cold winter, and I think we’re all ready to embrace the season’s change as the warm winds of summer roll in. Maybe you’re yearning for a bright, funky new hair color, or maybe you’re dying to chop it all off, ready to give your face and neck some reprieve from the upcoming summer heat.
Whether you’re looking for a completely new style or are just trying to figure out some new ways to spice up your everyday look, here are the hairstyles of 2022 that you NEED to try!
The Wolf Shag
This summer, it’s all about that shaggy hair, don’t care! The wolf shag hairstyle channels that 1980s mullet energy, but feminine and with a more edgy, modern twist. Think blonde Billie Eilish, with lots of choppy layers and loose waves. This one is all about edge, with some funky bangs that complement each individual face shape. Typically, this cut is styled with full-front bangs, but it also looks great with a loose, ruffled face-frame or uneven side-bangs.
While usually chosen for straight or wavy hair, those curly-haired folks who are looking to try something different — don’t worry! You would look great in this style, no matter the length. While the most common cut is mid-length, right around the shoulders — anyone can try it at any length! You could have longer hair — like Billie — or keep it short and sweet with lots of ruffled layers — like Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift.
The number of layers you add for texture and volume is completely up to you and is best determined by your face shape. Consult with your stylist — or just give it a go yourself if you’re looking for something fun and fresh this summer!
An Asymmetrical Bob
You read that right, the bob is making a comeback, with a twist! Even though you’ve likely seen this edgy-yet-chic style on Rhianna, Rachel McAdams, or, more recently, Selena Gomez, this look dates all the way back to London in the 1960s! The hair is cut with one side longer than the other to give it a full and sleek “swooshing” look. Straight hair can really have a smooth and silky polished appearance with this cut. Curly-haired gals, you can join the party, too, by throwing in a few layers to add extra texture and bounce.
Despite a common misconception that they’re all alike, bobs actually have lots of options. They can be cut to suit a multitude of different face shapes, and you can try out different lengths to match your style. If you’re nervous about cutting your hair too short, you could try out the “lob” — the long bob — which can extend all the way down to your shoulders. Or, if you’re looking for a more drastic change, try a strong blunt cut at your chin level. You can even layer it close to your head in the back, allowing it to hug the nape of your neck and sweep forward as it flows to the front to accentuate your jawline. If you’re searching for a low maintenance summer-ready cut — this one is for you!
“Money Piece” Highlights
Even if you’ve never heard of “money piece” highlights before, I guarantee you’ve seen it! This trend is popping up all over TikTok and Instagram. The style involves dying only the strands of hair closest to your face. It’s fairly subtle, but it makes such a difference in brightening up your eyes, face, and hair.
This low-maintenance, cost-effective style is great for someone who’s looking for a mini, low-commitment change. You’re probably most familiar with the pale blonde highlight paired with red or strawberry blonde face-framing sections, but this technique can be used with any color! Brunettes, you might want to try a warm caramel-colored highlight, while our blonde friends could go a cooler platinum route. If you’re looking for something a little more fun and spunky, maybe try a fire-engine red, a lighter lavender, or a bright magenta! There are endless possibilities for you to explore, and money piece highlights are a great way for you to try out a new color without having to fully commit!
Money piece highlights look great with any style, and they are another great way to flatter your face. Just sweep your hair up in a bun or high ponytail, and let those money pieces hang free.
Braids, Buns, & Beautiful Up-dos
Thanks to the return of Bridgerton with Season 2, this summer will see a smashing return of Georgian-era buns and up-dos. Now, I’m not just talking about your basic low bun here (and ballerina buns have been out for a while). These curly or loose wavy up-dos are fancy and fun, and a lot of them aren’t nearly as complex as they seem. You’d be amazed what a few well-placed ponytails and a curling wand can do! Brush up on your styling skills with some quick YouTube tutorials, and you’ll be looking like a Bridgerton in no time!
If you haven’t hopped on the Bridgerton-train yet or aren’t a fan of the elegant regency-era style, there are still plenty of creative ways for you to experiment with braids and buns! You can try out some cutesy cottagecore-esque long, flowing braids. Dutch and French braids are always a classic, plus accessories, like lace flowers, can spice up any style! You can even incorporate some space buns, if you’re looking for something a little more fun and quirky.
Copper Colors
The reddish, copper-colored hair trend has been going on these past few summers now, and we’re seeing it continue into 2022.
If your skin has a yellow undertone, the copper colors, or even softer blondes like strawberry or honey, will bring out those naturally warm tones in your skin. You will look sun kissed, even if you haven’t been spending all your time at the beach! Just adding a few highlights of copper coloring (like the money piece above) can make a big difference if you’re seeking something to brighten up your everyday look.
I strongly recommend speaking to your colorist about adding in some extra highlights or lowlights (maybe something close to your natural shade), as opposed to dying it all one color. This will add more dimension and give your hair a more natural look. So, if you’ve been looking for a sign to finally let your inner redhead out to play, this is it! As a redhead myself, I can guarantee no selling of your soul is required (but just to be safe, try to stay away from any contracts written in blood your stylist may request from you!).
The Rounded ‘Fro
2022 is all about embracing who you are, and what better way to do that than to let your natural hair shine through? The rounded ‘fro is perfect for any curly-haired folks who are looking for a style that matches how their hair naturally grows (although some afros do require touch-up shaping).
This style actually works with your hair as it gets longer, sculpting it into a voluptuous shape that shows off your thick and luscious locks. If you’re having trouble maintaining it, just talk to your stylist about chopping off any pieces that fall outside the shape you want, so you can keep it as round as you like.
This style is typically great for those with a more round or oval face shape, and it will keep your natural coils healthy and full of life!
Key Hair Accessories
I know some of these looks can seem pretty drastic, especially if you aren’t used to changing up your hair style. Maybe you’ve finally found the color that suits you best, or you prefer to keep your hair au naturel. It’s okay if you aren’t ready to chop or dye your hair, there are still plenty of ways you can mix up your style this summer!
We’re seeing a resurgence of hair accessories from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Oversized claw clips are making a huge comeback! They’re perfect when paired with a blouse or blazer for a polished, yet laid-back, easy style. If you’re looking for something a little more fun and quirky, it’s time to get those old bedazzled barrettes and butterfly clips out from the back of your drawer! These babies are back in style and are a great way to add a little pop of playful pizazz into any ensemble.
It wouldn’t be a ‘90s resurgence without the classic scrunchy. These casual, yet versatile accessories are ideal for that easy-going, put-together look. However, go for the silk versions this time around! They’re very gentle on the hair, so when you throw it up in a ponytail or a bun, it’s more comfortable and is less likely to snag or pull when taken out. Silk scrunchies are also a great way to add in a little pop of color to your everyday style, and they work well with any thickness of hair!
Overall, the most important thing this summer is to balance who you are and embrace the person you want to be. That could mean taking a chance on a haircut you’ve been itching to try for ages — something you never dreamed of actually doing, but somehow feels right — or simply sticking to your lovely, natural roots!
